Michel Barnier and Bruno Retailleau are traveling this Saturday, September 28 to Mâcon as part of the national firefighters’ congress. Hervé Marseille, president of the centrist union group in the Senate, shares his expectations on the trip of the two men.

A speech awaited by many French people at 10:30 a.m. Saturday September 28. Prime Minister Michel Barnier and Bruno Retailleau, Minister of the Interior, travel in pairs to the national firefighters’ congress. For Hervé Marseille, it is an expected speech during which the political line of the new government should appear. “First the budgetary problem, we are very in debt, so inevitably there will be savings and we will have to find revenue“. Asked about the solutions that the new government could find, Hervé Marseille declared: “When you are in debt, there is no other solution than to control public spending. Everyone will be asked to contribute, all sectors.

For the president of the centrist union group in the Senate, saving money and reducing state spending will not be enough. “We will have to make 25 billion savings each year until 2029, we will have to find revenue, not necessarily taxes“, he points out before indicating that France was one of the most taxed countries in Europe. According to Hervé Marseille, this can involve taxes on businesses, on the wealthiest households or even an increase in the flat tax at 35% compared to 30% currently.
