With “Ceux du dans”, Charlotte Milanndri and Caroline Laurent wanted to give the inmates a voice by having them write. Charlotte Milanndri is a guest on franceinfo, Friday April 19.

The book Those inside (Éditions First), brings together the words of prisoners. It was co-written by Caroline Laurent and Charlotte Milanndri, a lawyer by training. The latter is the guest of franceinfo, Friday April 19. If she admits to having faced some reluctance at the beginning, the author explains that “the big job was to inspire confidence and install it”. In a remand center, prisoners are incarcerated for minor sentences or for sentences awaiting trial. “We still managed to have a hard core of nine inmates who were there every time”indicates Charlotte Milanndri.

“Make it heard outside”

In the book, the inmates express themselves in their own words and nothing has been censored. “That was the challenge of this book, to make it heard outside, because they are a lot like us”assures the author. “We wanted their own words and not just a testimony of us going to prison”develops Charlotte Milanndri, who observed changes in the inmates as she wrote.
