‘We support the fundamental rights of the Iranian people. It’s not about interference,’ says Joe Biden’s special envoy for Iran

Robert Malley, US President Joe Biden’s special envoy for Iran, said Monday, November 14 on France Inter that he “It is good that the international community is mobilizing (…) to punish and be sure that justice is done”after two months of repression in the country.

“There is a deep, persistent, tenacious, courageous grassroots movement, with many young people who face extraordinary risks to make themselves heard”says Robert Malley. “Our policy is to support the fundamental rights of Iranian men and women. They are now facing brutal repression from the regime”

If the United States lifted part of the sanctions which concerned digital companies, to allow Iranians to have more access to the Internet, “there are always penalties that can be applied”insists Robert Malley. “Sanctions are a tool, not the only one, not often the best, but it is important to show that we will punish those who violate human rights in Iran”he adds, without specifying which ones could be added to those already existing.
