“We still have room for improvement ahead of us”, reacts Alexandre Lasch, the director general of the National Union of Phonographic Publishing, this Tuesday, March 14 on franceinfo in the eco guest. The National Syndicate has taken stock of its 2022 report. The French market is doing well with constant growth for six years and sales of nearly 600 million euros last year. “This is good news. The market is mainly driven by the subscription streaming offer, which for a number of years has enabled the market to start up again.”

>> The turnover of the French recorded music market increased by 6.4% between 2021 and 2022

This subscription streaming market although “created in France with the company Deezer” is not yet at its full potential, notes Alexandre Lasch. The country is only 16th in the world for subscription music listening. “We have a subscription streaming penetration rate in France which is still quite low today, if we compare it with the other major music markets. If we look at the United States or, even closer to us, in UK, there are already a lot more subscribers to streaming platforms.”

“In France, there are now 11 million subscribers. We still have room for improvement ahead of us.”

Behind streaming, there are CDs and vinyls, “25% of the market” notes the Director General of the National Syndicate of Phonographic Publishing. “It’s also the exact opposite of ten years ago. Ten years ago, CDs and vinyl accounted for 75% of sales compared to 25% for streaming.” Despite these figures, the CD remains the primary purchase medium for consumers, while vinyl is making a place of choice among young consumers, 59% of whom are under 35 years old.

French music consumers look almost exclusively to French-speaking artists. Unlike the cinema, where American productions monopolize the top spots, the French-speaking music scene tops the charts. In France, rapper Jul was the most listened to artist ahead of Ninho and Orelsan. “The most listened to artists are 100% French-speaking artists”welcomes Alexandre Lasch. “Of the 100,000 most listened to titles on streaming platforms, 77% are recent titles less than ten years old and of these, two-thirds are French productions.”
