In France, the public deficit reached 5.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) for the year 2023, according to figures communicated by INSEE on Tuesday March 26. The government initially expected a deficit of 4.9%, but this forecast had been revised upwards in recent weeks. “We noticed a very sharp drop in our revenue at the end of the year, linked to the economic slowdown and geopolitical disorder”, explains Thomas Cazenave, Minister Delegate in charge of Public Accounts, live from Paris for the 8 Hours. The minister mentions the “war in Ukraine” and the “Chinese slowdown”.
“Our door is open”
“We lost more than 20 billion (euros) in revenue at the end of the year”, specifies Thomas Cazenave. The minister says he is opposed to a reduction in the public deficit “by massively increasing taxes”. “On a certain number of subjects singled out, notably by the Court of Auditors, by parliamentarians, on the super-profits of energy companies, our door is open. There is no dogmatic position”he adds, however.
