Strikes in Lebanon by the Israeli army continue Monday, September 30. The threat of a land incursion still looms over southern Lebanon. Khattar Abou Diab, political scientist and specialist in the Middle East, analyzes the situation in Lebanon at a time when Hezbollah finds itself considerably weakened.
Since the death of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah on Friday September 27, many people have questioned the viability of the movement: “It is reduced but it is not finished. It is a religious, ideological party (…) it continues to function as long as the Iranian machine functions”analyzes Khattar Abou Diab. “But it’s true that we wonder”he adds.
Since the strikes have intensified in the south of the country, some among the population have also wondered about the risk of a civil war. “I don’t think civil war is on the cards, there is no one who wants to finance it. I rather fear chaos”continues the analyst. Despite everything, the future of the Lebanese seems darker than ever with almost a million displaced since the intensification of strikes by the Israeli army in southern Lebanon: “The only alternative is for Hezbollah to give way to the army in Lebanon”finally affirms the political scientist.
