The decision of the European Council to open accession negotiations with Ukraine is “extremely powerful political support which means that we link our destiny to Ukraine for decades to come”estimates Pieyre-Alexandre Anglade, deputy for French people established abroad, Friday December 15 on franceinfo.

Just like the United States which welcomed a “historic decision” after the formalization of this European announcement Thursday evening, the one who is also president of the European Affairs Committee of the National Assembly “I think this is the most important decision in the recent history of European construction.”

“It is also a message also sent to Russia from Vladimir Putin”, added Pieyre-Alexandre Anglade. “We have seen Vladimir Putin, in recent weeks, hoping for a sort of fatigue, of weariness on the part of Europeans and Westerners who couldaccording to him, distract them from supporting Ukraine. With this message, Europeans are telling Vladimir Putin that their support will be lasting.”

However, European Union leaders failed to vote for 50 billion euros in aid to support Ukraine in its war against Russia. “There is today a blockage in the European Council which is due to the Hungarian leader Viktor Orban, who is an ally of Vladimir Putin, it must be said as clearly as that,” deplores Pieyre-Alexandre Anglade. “He has opposed decisions in the past, he refuses to give in. There will be a new European Council at the beginning of January which should make it possible to release this 50 billion aid.”

This aid to Ukraine must remain sustainable, recommends the MP for French people established abroad, because “Vladimir Putin will not stop at Ukraine if it falls. If Ukraine had fallen almost two years ago now, Vladimir Putin would be testing the borders of Poland, the Baltic States, Romania or maybe other countries.”
