Summer is coming, the deadliest season on the roads of the Côte d’Azur with the influx of tourists and saturated roads. The main axes are prone to accidents with the great descents on the A8 and the mountain roads. The year 2022 got off to a bad start for road safety in the Alpes-Maritimes.
After two years marked by covid and declining mortality figures, mortality is on the rise again in the department. 24 people have lost their lives since January 1, 2022, making it the deadliest first six months of the year in 6 years, second only to 2019.
The road kills more on the Côte d’Azur than elsewhere
Last year, 17 road users died during this same period. This upward trend confirms the poor momentum at the end of 2021. Of the 941 personal injury accidents that occurred last year, 50 were fatal for 52 deaths. The Alpes-Maritimes account for 3.7% of road deaths in France, while the department is home to only 1.6% of the population.
Fewer accidents but they are more fatal
We therefore die proportionally more on the roads of the Riviera than elsewhere. A positive indicator however, the evolution of the number of accidents and injuries over 5 years with a reduction by half for serious accidents and hospitalizations. As a result, there are fewer accidents but they are more often fatal.
