Behind the Kiev Institute of Forensic Scientific Research and Study, remnants of missiles, rockets and drones are stored under a layer of icy snow. Igor Kultchytsky, the director of the laboratory, is keen to show pieces of the Iranian Shahed drone. It then shows a Russian-made missile that killed an elderly couple last week.

In Ukraine, the Russians continue to bomb Ukraine: Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city, has been particularly targeted in recent days. Some of the missiles or drones that fall on the country are carefully examined by the Ukrainian army, in a laboratory in kyiv, to determine their composition and the origin of the components.

“A huge list”

Everything happens in prefabs. The projectiles are dismantled there and the components analyzed. And their provenance determined. “This is the branding of the Lynred company, from the French. We found him last week. You see, it was in the thermal camera that we found the French microprocessor. Here, the experts work, they extract elements from the remains of the projectiles that we receive. We found elements from France, the United States, Canada, Japan, Ireland, England… And that’s a huge list. Oh my, there are a lot of them!“, he reveals.

Many of these electronic components were sold before the sanctions took effect. Lately, the Russian army is doing everything to cover its tracks so as not to provide any information on how it assembles its missiles, explains the laboratory’s communications director.

“On the last parts, we noticed that they had erased any form of marking with lasers. In this case, it is absolutely impossible for us to continue our expertise”

Director of Communications of the kyiv Institute of Forensic Scientific Research and Study

The Ukrainian army said it this week, and it is confirmed by the laboratory: the sanctions are starting to bear fruit, says the director of the institute Oleksander Rouvin. “For example, before there was a motor for opening the wings of glide bombs. Now they replaced it with a domestic fan motor. By the way, it is produced in France. This is what allows the bombs to deploy“, he deciphers.

Originally this institute had no link with the war. It was dedicated to legal analyzes for investigations. Today, pieces of missiles are stored a bit in the yard.
