The party was in full swing on Saturday evening in Johannesburg, after the Springboks’ victory over the All Blacks.
Clouds had suggested that rain was going to spoil the evening. In the end, it rained, but it was beer that fell from the sky, in this Johannesburg fanzone, where nearly 3,000 people gathered in the open air to experience a historic moment together. And at the end of the final of this 2023 World Cup, on Saturday October 28, it was the South Africans who won, and won their fourth world title, the second in a row. “The Kings of the world”headlined the national press immediately.
So, the supporters climbed onto the tables as if to signify that South Africa is now firmly established on the roof of the world. It is quite simply the most successful nation in the history of rugby. “We beat France, England and New Zealand. We are the best in the world”exults a supporter.
“This is our fourth Cup. No country has ever done this!”

“Stronger together”
The very narrow one-point victories against France, England and New Zealand are seen as lessons for the entire nation. “It was indecisive, but we held on. That’s the South African spirit. We have to stick together! That’s what South Africa needs”says another supporter.
“Stronger together”, this is also the slogan that accompanied the Springbok World Cup. This fourth trophy allows South African society, often compartmentalized, to commune. “It doesn’t matter if you are white, black, mixed race, Indian, Asian… Who cares!welcomes this supporter. It’s a time when we get together and celebrate together.”
Symbol of this union, the South African anthem was sung by the crowd at the end of the meeting. A hymn in five languages that ends with a call for unity.
