“We don’t let people die in France!”, Christophe Dechavanne reframes Marion Maréchal in “Quelle Epoque!” about State Medical Aid!

This Saturday, February 4, 2023, in the second part of the evening, What an era! received on its set, hosted by Léa Salamé, Christophe Dechavanne and Philippe Caverivière, many guests. Among them, the journalists of Olivier Truchot and Alain Marschall, known for their show The Big Mouths on RMC, but also writer Philippe Besson, surfing champion Justine Dupont and comedian Waly Dia. On the political side, it was not one guest but two who came to defend their ideas and exchange their points of view. Marlène Schiappa, on the one hand, the Secretary of State in charge of the Social and Solidarity Economy and Associative Life, and Marion Maréchal, on the other hand, the executive vice-president of the Reconquest party of Eric Zemmour.

And the discussion around the AME, the State Medical Aid, has seen tempers flare… Having come to defend this system, Marlène Schiappa first explains the principle which consists in helping “people who come from foreign countries, who are sick and who have the possibility of being treated, not only…” Marion Maréchal cuts it off immediately: “We are the only ones in the world to do that… I specify it”, and Christophe Dechavanne replies: “That’s wonderful !”. Slowed down in her tracks, Marlène Schiappa continues: “Not only do we do it for a question of humanity… because we are in France and we don’t let people in France die…” Marion Maréchal intersects it: “We don’t let people die in France or anywhere else…”. Léa Salamé is then obliged to intervene because they speak at the same time and this is inaudible. The Minister finally continues: “So we are in France, we don’t let people in France die, whatever their skin color, whatever their nationality, that’s the first thing. If you suppress the AME, you let people die…”. Marion Maréchal picks up the ball again: “No ma’am, because we don’t talk about emergency care”.

“It is also a matter of public health”

But Marlène Schiappa does not let herself be cut off and replies: “It’s not just emergency care, if you have a long, long-term illness, it’s not emergency care. The second thing… is that it’s a matter of public health, if you decide out of cynicism or xenophobia to remove care for foreign people who do not have access to the usual medical coverage, that means that you leave spread a number of epidemics, so it is also a matter of public health.” The minister would like to move on to other subjects, but Marion Maréchal wants to explain herself on the AME: “I don’t have the impression that the other European countries are inhuman countries, and yet they haven’t set up a system like State Medical Aid, they take care of… emergency care.” Annoyed, Christophe Dechavanne prefers to conclude by answering him: “The AME is a pride of the country for the doctors who practice it, especially for the public service and for the hospital”. An exchange of the most jostled which has obviously been more than commented on the Web!
