Glyphosate is in the process of being authorized by the European Union until 2033. Guest of 12/13 info, Thursday September 21, environmentalist MEP Marie Toussaint judges that “it’s aberrant”.

The European Commission is proposing to authorize glyphosate until 2033, a period twice as long as the previous one. The use of glyphosate must be accompanied by risk mitigation measures. “It’s absurd. We have known for a very long time that glyphosate (…) is carcinogenic to humans and extremely harmful to ecosystems. We should have banned it entirely a long time ago”deplores Marie Toussaint, MEP and vice-president of the Greens group.

“A law separating lobbies and institutions”

Asked about studies, the head of the EELV list for the 2024 Europeans answers: “We don’t take into account the cocktail effects. When we add glyphosate, it doesn’t come out on its own. It’s always mixed with other products. That’s not taken into account by the French authorities, nor by the European authorities. The second problem is the weight of lobbies. I would like us to have a law separating lobbies and institutions.” The MEP continues: “The health agency only takes into account studies made available to it by the manufacturers themselves.”
