“We demand a drop in the price at the pump for all and which would go well beyond 18 cents”said Thursday July 21 on franceinfo Véronique Louwagie, deputy Les Républicains de l’Orne. “We tabled an amendment with a discount of 40 cents from September until December. So, from there, there is a prism between 18 and 40 cents”, adds the vice-president of the finance committee of the National Assembly. Discussions will continue within the framework of the amending finance bill for 2022.

The member remains firm on “a drop much greater than the one that exists” of 18 euro cents per liter of gasoline put in place by the government. The majority and the opposition are working on a compromise to find one or more devices that would help the French to cope with rising fuel prices. The “big wheels” device, envisaged by the government at first, could pay the price. “We finally denounced this administrative gas plant” who “would only have benefited certain categories of French people”she explains.

Initially, the Republicans demanded a drop in the price of a liter of gasoline to 1.50 euros. “We measure that it is a significant cost,” she admits. The government rejected this proposal. Republicans are not opposed to degressivity: “You have to see what kind of degression is. What base we are starting from. And what is the threshold at the finish. It is important to have a degression that does not end up at zero in December and that is on a slope acceptable”she offered.

“We are also asking for a doubling of the tax-free fuel check that employers can pay to their employees, from 200 to 400 euros.“, she added.
