In an interview with franceinfo, Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, discusses the fate and composite portrait of these 90 million people fleeing their countries and their homes.
“In the vast majority of people on the run, the largest part of these people want to return home as quickly as possible”emphasizes Filippo Grandi. If wars and persecutions are among the main causes that refugees composed mainly of women and children are fleeing, these situations are mixed with other factors such as climate change, poverty and even the pandemic. “All this coincides in a set of causes that has become difficult to manage, but we cannot give up”.
While the war in Ukraine caused the departure of millions of people, the High Commissioner notes that contrary to what he has been hearing for years, Europe is not full and can receive millions of refugees with efficiency and generosity. “I want to see it in a positive way and I say, it’s possible to do it. But these answers have to happen elsewhere too.”
“Anyone fleeing war, persecution, violations, deserves the same attention, the same protection, the same resources, and the same efforts to find solutions to their situations”, he concludes.
