“For our security, we cannot depend on the whims of a president as unpredictable as Donald Trump if he were to win next November”said Renew MEP Nathalie Loiseau on franceinfo on Monday February 12, after the threats from the Republican candidate for the White House on NATO.
Donald Trump threatened on Saturday, if he returned to the White House, to no longer guarantee the protection of NATO countries against Russia if they did not pay their share, even saying that he “would encourage” Moscow to attack them.
“There is a risk that Donald Trump will turn his back on us”according to Nathalie Loiseau. “We must take charge of our destiny and not systematically outsource it to the United States”she added. “There are many things that have been started at the level of European defense, but it is not enough and it is not going fast enough”.
“All European countries must do more”she continued. “No one can say today that we are doing enough, both to help Ukraine and to protect ourselves. The European Union must be able to dissuade an unfriendly country from attacking us”.
