“We can estimate that it will take us eight days for a return to normal”, said Tuesday, February 1 on franceinfo Yves Moraine, spokesperson for the Metropolis of Marseille, while a garbage collectors’ strike has greatly disrupted the collection of garbage cans for more than ten days. This is the third garbage collectors’ strike in four months in Marseille.
“We are catching up with 250 tonnes collected per day”, explained the spokesperson for the metropolis. “Last Wednesday we were 3,200 tonnes behind. We’ve made up 1,000 since last Thursday. We have 2,000 more to catch up.”
Yves Moraine also reacted to the call for private companies by the PS mayor of the city Benoît Payan to pick up the waste since Tuesday morning: “He decided to lend a hand. It’s always taken”, he greets. “I would always prefer someone who in a crisis comes to lend a hand than someone who offers sterile criticism”, because according to the spokesperson for the metropolis, “the priority is to make the city clean for the Marseillais as soon as possible.”
