“We are really experiencing MeToo today” in France, says director Justine Triet

The director of the film “Anatomy of a Fall”, recently awarded the Oscar for best original screenplay, believes on France Inter on Saturday that a slow movement to free speech is underway in France.

“We are really experiencing MeToo today” in French cinema, believes, Saturday March 16 on France Inter, Justine Triet director of the multi-award winning film “Anatomy of a Fall”. “It took us longer to get there in France, each time, we take a little longer”analyzes the filmmaker for whom “this liberation of speech is necessary”.

“It’s changing slowly, it’s still very slow”insists Justine Triet. “I was the only female director facing all the men nominated for the Oscars”she recalls.

Anatomy of a “completely soaked in post-MeToo” fall

“Judith Godrèche, after Adèle Haenel, after many other women who spoke before them, say essential, necessary things”, says Justine Triet. Judith Godrèche filed a complaint against the directors Benoît Jacquot and Jacques Doillon for “rape of a minor under 15 years old”. During a Senate hearing on February 29, the actress also requested the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry into labor law in the world of cinema and “risks for children”.

“I continue to be careful on my set”explains Justine Triet who recalls that cinema is a “environment where the hierarchy is very strong”. “As boat leaders, we are obliged to be careful of those who do not dare to speak”she says.

“Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, six Césars including best film and best direction, but also, on March 10, the Oscar for best original screenplay. It recounts the trial of a woman suspected of the murder of her husband. “This film was still written after MeToo, it is completely soaked in post-MeToo”, explains Justine Triet. She confides that many people identified with the couple and their conflicted relationship. “It resonated in a very intimate place of people and we cannot predict that.”
