“We are facing the biggest club in the world”, said Lille coach Bruno Genesio at the microphone of the Sports department of Radio France, Wednesday October 2. At 9 p.m., Lille hosts Real Madrid on the second day of the Champions League. The Spanish club is the defending champion and the most successful club in this European competition, with 15 victories.

This is the first time that Losc faces Real Madrid, where Kylian Mbappé now plays. But there is no question of enduring this encounter, warns Bruno Genesio: “If you show up on the pitch as a victim and tell yourself that the match is lost before you play it, it is better to stay at home”assures the Lille coach. “That said, we also have to be realistic. We are facing the biggest club in the world, with six [titres de] Champions League won over the last ten years. Obviously, the debates seem unbalanced before the match.”

However, Bruno Genesio believes in the feat, as has happened many times in the history of football. This is also what makes “the charm” of this sport, explains the Losc coach, “which makes everyone love football. Sometimes the little guy can beat the big guy.”

During the first day of the group stage of the Champions League, Lille lost in Lisbon, against Sporting Clube de Portugal (2-0), Tuesday September 17.
