Floods in Pas-de-Calais: water again at the doors of houses
Floods in Pas-de-Calais: water again at the doors of houses – (France 2)
Pas-de-Calais is on orange alert for rain and flooding, Monday January 1, and on flood alert. The department’s soils are waterlogged, and one night of intense rain is enough to cause the rivers to overflow.
The streets of Bourthes (Pas-de-Calais) are submerged again, Monday January 1, for the second time in less than two months. The Aa river is overflowing due to the rains of recent hours. Only a few cars still dare to drive in the heart of the village. For the inhabitants, the awakening was cruel and exasperation set in. A couple lost almost everything during the first flood in early November. “We are terrified, as soon as it rains we are at the window, we look“, confides the woman.
The powerless elected officials
Residents are at the end of their tether, and elected officials feel helpless in the face of too much flooding. On board his tractor, Henri Mailly, deputy (SE) for works at Bourthes town hall, tries to reassure. But everyone here fears a new disaster scenario. “Everyone had cleaned their houses… We wonder what will happen to us in the next few days given the weather forecast they are telling us“, he comments. In the center of the village, the water is already at the doorstep of some houses.
