Waste in nature, it has to stop“, proclaims the president of World CleanUp Day France Virginie Guérin on Saturday September 17 on franceinfo, on the occasion of the world day for the collection of waste thrown into nature. More than 2,000 operations are planned throughout France.

The objective of this world day is “to unite all our forces everywhere around the world, all citizens, whoever we are, a person with a disability, a child, a general manager of a large company or even a member of the government, we can all participate. The subject is really to make sure that everyone can understand by taking action, a very simple gesture“, she explains.

Virginie Guérin particularly wants to raise awareness among smokers, because cigarette butts, often found on “stagnant areas“like bus stops, benches, picnic areas, are”catastrophic for the environment“, according to her.

“A well-extinguished cigarette butt goes in any bin. A cigarette butt pollutes 500 liters of water and we don’t know enough about it, it’s water that goes, by runoff, directly into the rivers. It is absolutely necessary that cigarette butts are no longer thrown away in nature.”

The association will take stock of all that has been collected on October 14, and will show in particular the amount of waste that could have been recycled if it had been thrown in the right bin. This would have made it possible not to use other natural resources.

People wishing to participate can register for an event on the World CleanUp Day France website: https://www.worldcleanupday.fr/.
