Washington Tournament | Shapovalov wins against Adrian Mannarino

(Washington) Denis Shapovalov soundly beat Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-1 in 59 minutes to advance to the third round of the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington on Tuesday night.


The 25-year-old Ontario native had seven aces and 15 winners in the match, compared to zero and six for his opponent, who was 6e top seed of the tournament.

Shapovalov, ranked 139e at the ATP, converted four of his seven break points, while preventing Mannarino, 32e in the world, to get a single break point.

“Shapo” put 73% of his first serves into play and won 86% of his points on his first serve.

He won 46% of the points on his second serve, but only committed two double faults.

Mannarino, for his part, had a difficult evening on serve. Only 50% of his first serves fell into play, and the Frenchman won only 55% of the points on his first serve, and 35% on his second.

Shapovalov has now won two of his three meetings with Mannarino, 36. Their last meeting was in 2017.

The Canadian will face the 12e tournament seed and 51e world champion Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round. Shapovalov has beaten the Serb in each of the two men’s three meetings.

The Citi Open is an ATP 500 tournament played on hard courts. Most of the world’s best players are currently at the Paris Olympics tournament.
