Wilson tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on May 3 while trying to avoid a body check in the Capitals’ first-ever game against the Florida Panthers in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

He had skated thereafter, without however returning to the game. In a press conference after the elimination of his team in six games, Wilson had indicated that his summer was going to be “terrible”, when he expected to have to go under the knife.

In the best of all possible worlds, Wilson will be back in November. In the worst, it will go to January.

The 28-year-old Torontonian is coming off the best offensive season of his career with 52 points in 78 games, fourth in team scoring.
