Washington Capitals | Three-year contract extension for Trevor van Riemsdyk

(New York) The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk to a three-year extension worth $9 million.

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan made the announcement Saturday, hours before his team takes on the New York Islanders. The agreement will end after the 2025-26 season and the annual salary on the payroll will be three million.

Van Riemsdyk, 31, and forward Conor Sheary were the only two unrestricted free agents the Capitals did not trade at the trade deadline. It’s unclear if Sheary and the Capitals are close to an agreement.

The Washington roster has made it clear that van Riemsdyk is part of the solution on the blue line, as has Nick Jensen, who signed a three-year, $12.15 million deal to stay with the Capitals.

After 66 games this season, van Riemsdyk set a career-high 19 points. The New Jersey native has taken his game up a notch and racked up more minutes since defenseman John Carlson was injured in December.
