We will have to wait until July 19, in France, to find out more about the world of Barbie as imagined by Greta Gerwig, a figure of independent cinema in the United States.
A second trailer for the film “Barbie”, directed by American Greta Gerwig and starring comedians Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was unveiled by Warner Bros.
The pink world of Barbie, Mattel’s famous doll, finally takes shape and the extract gives a promising foretaste of the feature film. Its release is scheduled for July 21 in the United States and from July 19 internationally. It is on this date that French spectators will be able to see the fiction whose Greta Gerwig, rising star of independent cinema in the United States, and her companion, the American director Noah Baumbach, sign the screenplay.
Ken in all his states
In the new excerpt, we also discover the superb cast of Barbie, are there America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman and Will Ferrell. But also Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-AdirSimu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa or even Helen Mirren.
The trailer already offers at least one cult line. While they are driving somewhere in the desert, Barbie is surprised to see Ken by her side. She then asks him:Did you take your rollerblades? And Ken replies, as if his life depended on it: “I take them everywhere!”
The treatment of Ken’s character is one of the film’s main issues as evidenced by its synopsis:“To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you’re in the midst of an existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.” The leitmotif of the film drives the point home – “She can do anything. He’s just Ken” – and explains why Ryan Gosling accepted the role of Ken who, he finds, is just a “accessory” for Barbie. The actor confided recently, with a lot of humor, that Ken’s story absolutely deserved to be told.
The first excerpt from Barbie was made public three months ago. We then discovered the voice of the narrator who is none other than the British actress Helen Mirren.
The photos of the actors in fluorescent costumes, taken during filming in Los Angeles, had already caused a sensation on the Web. Most of the filming of Barbie however, took place in London.
