War only claims victims

It is difficult for me to write about what is currently happening in Ukraine. In front of the terrible images and testimonies coming from Ukraine, and in front of the repression experienced by the Russians who oppose the war waged by their country, one can only feel strong emotions. However, I do not know if emotion is a good adviser when it comes to a reality as serious as war.

Emotion tells us: “Let’s go, we too, are going to fight with these Ukrainians! […] But is this really what must be done?

I try to take a step back, to see things “differently” (without knowing exactly what this “otherwise” would be), because I have more and more the impression of being myself a prisoner of the warlike rhetoric that has settled for two weeks between Russia and Ukraine and, more broadly, between Russia and almost all the countries of the world.

When a conflict between two individuals escalates, it is good to stop for a moment to regain your composure. Everyone goes to their room, changes their minds, takes a long breath. And it is not uncommon for the rage to dissipate on its own, giving way to a more constructive dialogue, even if it is difficult, paved with pitfalls and we do not know the outcome.

What a pity that nations cannot do the same… This war is off to a bad start and it is already visible that it will only result in losers and victims, like all wars. Some questions remain unanswered: these losers and these victims, how many will there be? And in how many countries?
