Mariupolin Ukraine, has fallen into the hands of the Russians, who impose their rules. A new municipal Council has been put in place, and a fake mayor now rules the city.

Constantine Ivashenkoa former factory manager, is the man the Russians and the separatists put in charge of Mariupol (Ukraine). He was previously just a pro-Russian city councilor from an opposition party and wants Mariupol be part of the Russia because, according to him, Russian speakers were persecuted in Ukraine. “We were forced to think we were second-class citizens. This is unacceptable”he said.

Russian and separatist soldiers, new masters of almost the entire city, escort him everywhere. “For the Republic of Donetsk, I am the legitimate head of the city administration”assures Constantin Ivashenko. For many residents of the city, however, he remains a stranger. The elected mayor of Mariupol took refuge in the part of the country still under Ukrainian control.
