In the context of the war in Ukraine, there remains an extremely powerful means of pressure that the Europeans do not use against Russia: energy. Why doesn’t Europe stop buying Russian gas and oil? Journalist Jean-Paul Chapel, present on the set of 20 Hours, sheds light.
Energy cannot constitute a means of pressure against Russia for the Europeans because, “for its energy sources, Europe depends far too much on Russia and could not quickly replace them”, explains journalist Jean-Paul Chapel, present on the set of 20 Hours. Thus, Russia represents 40% of European gas imports: it is the leading supplier. In the European Union, some countries are much more dependent than others, such as Germany, which imports 65% of its gas from Russia.
“For oil, Russia is the second supplier in Europe, just after Saudi Arabia”, continues Jean-Paul Chapel. Russian oil accounts for 20% of the oil imported by the European Union. In France, 13% of imported oil comes from Russia.
