It will be several months before the Ukrainian army receives the 31 Abrams tanks promised by the American government a few days ago.
For the simple reason that the US military does not have enough in stock, said Sabrina Singh, deputy press secretary at the Pentagon. “We don’t have any of these surplus tanks,” she said at a press briefing on Thursday.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III therefore suggested to President Joe Biden that the tanks be purchased directly from the manufacturer through Ukraine’s Security Assistance Program instead of through his department.
However, this will allow Ukraine to receive the most sophisticated version of the tanks, namely the Abrams M1A2s, capable of targeting two targets at the same time and not in sequence.
Recall that on January 25, Germany and the United States announced their intention to send Leopard 2 and Abrams tanks to Ukraine, thus ending months of procrastination on this issue.
