Bob Rae, Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations, is now barred from entering Russia, as are five prime ministers, including Doug Ford of Ontario, Jason Kenney of Alberta and John Horgan of British Columbia.

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem, Vice Admiral Craig Baines, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Katie Telford and former Senator Roméo Dallaire are also on the list.

Sanctions also target Canadian journalists such as the international correspondent of the Globe and Mail Mark MacKinnon and the columnist of National Post John Ivison, as well as the editor of the Globe and MailDavid Wamsley, and CBC/Radio-Canada President and CEO, Catherine Tait.

Russia claims on the Foreign Ministry website that these people are all “directly involved in the development, justification and implementation of the Russophobic current of the regime in power in Canada”.

President Vladimir Putin’s regime has already barred many prominent Canadians from entering the country, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, cabinet ministers and MPs from all parties.

A subsidiary of Globe and Mail holds an investment in The Canadian Press under a joint agreement with Torstar and a subsidiary of The Press.
