War in Ukraine | Mykolaiv hit by a Russian strike, at least two dead

(Mykolaiv) At least two people died Tuesday in a Russian strike that partially destroyed the building of the regional administration of Mykolaiv, a Ukrainian city near Odessa which has experienced a respite from the bombardments in recent days.

AFP journalists saw two corpses being pulled from the rubble of the building, the central section of which partially collapsed after the strike.

Regional Governor Vitaly Kim said on Facebook that relief was looking for “eight civilians and three soldiers” under the rubble. He said most of those inside at the time of the strike were unharmed.

Mr. Kim said that “half of the building was destroyed” and his office affected. The Russians “understood that they could not take Mykolaiv and decided to say hello to me, to say hello to all of us”, he quipped.

AFP reporters also saw shards of glass near the regional veterans office on a nearby street corner.

“I was having breakfast in my apartment,” Donald, a 69-year-old retired Canadian living in Ukraine, told AFP. “I heard a whistle, then a boom and my windows rattled,” he continued.

” It’s frightening. We were lucky here in Mykolaiv, we didn’t have as many explosions in the center of the city” as in other cities, he added.
