War in Ukraine | Moscow says it foiled Ukrainian drone attack in west

(Moscow) Russia claimed Tuesday morning to have thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack that occurred overnight in the Belgorod region (west), bordering Ukraine.

An attack carried out by Kyiv “using seven drones against targets on the territory of the Russian Federation was prevented,” the Defense Ministry reported on the Telegram social network.

“All Ukrainian drones were intercepted” by local air defense, according to the same source, which did not mention the exact location of the attack or possible damage or injuries.

The governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, described on Tuesday morning the attack by a drone of the Ukrainian armed forces against the Russian town of Gubkin.

No casualties were recorded after the fall and detonation of the device, explains Mr. Gladkov, but “damage was noted” in four homes, such as broken windows.

Kyiv has increased its attacks on Russian territory in recent months and generally focuses on border regions such as Belgorod.

On December 30, the regional capital, Belgorod, was hit by the deadliest attack on Russian soil since the start of the offensive on February 24, 2022. Twenty-five people were then killed, around a hundred injured and several hundreds more evacuated.
