On the evening of Thursday March 31, buses were sent by the Ukrainian government to evacuate civilians stranded on the road to Mariupol. On site, at Zaporizhiathe special envoy Maryse Burgot details the situation.
“It is on this huge car park in the city of Zaporijia that the inhabitants coming from Mariupol are directed”reports Maryse Burgot, special correspondent in Ukraine, Thursday March, 31st. “We saw several hundred private cars arrive this evening, with of course residents inside”she continues. The 76 buses that have been made available to the inhabitants of Mariupol to evacuate are still blocked at 80km from the city.
“According to the International Red Cross, the conditions are not yet in place for a large evacuation. We have to agree with the Ukrainian authorities, but also with the Russian authorities on a very specific route, on a departure time and for the moment, this is not the case”explains Maryse Burgot.
