Faced with soaring energy costs caused by the conflict in Ukraine, what alternative is there to Russian gas in France?

How to replace Russian gas? In France, there is gas, under the slag heaps of Pas-de-Calais. Mining activity stopped in the 1980s, replaced by gas activity. The gas is captured, filtered and injected into the French network. It is distributed to the equivalent of 100,000 homes, with a potential of 9 billion m3 in the region. Another advantage of this French gas: his price. With the war in Ukraine, gas from Pas-de-Calais is four to five times less Dear than Russian gas.

Anaerobic digestion is another way of producing gas in France. In the largest methanisation unit in Seine-et-Marne, organic matter is transformed into gas. The gas produced is, here too, directly injected into the French network. Anaerobic digestion represents 2% of French gas production. For Carole Mathieu, a specialist on the subject, it will however be difficult to do without Russian gas.
