War in Ukraine: Fear of sunflower oil shortage drives prices up

Ukraine is one of the biggest sunflower producers. AT the country alone assures 53% world sunflower oil exports. This is 30% for Russia. But the war put the subsidiary on hold, and raised fears of a risk of shortage. In Spain, some customers are starting to stock up. To avoid the rush on oil bottles, supermarkets started rationing: 5 liters maximum per customer.

In Ukraine, 70% of exports pass through the Black Sea. The halt in maritime traffic has disrupted all trade, and this could last according to Arthur Portier, specialist in the subject. Uncertainty contributes to soaring prices. A French chip production company is already suffering the brunt of it. Other vegetable oils are also on the rise. In France, the giant oils Mister ensures that there is no risk of shortage on its products, because they come from French seeds.
