War in Ukraine | Explosions heard in Kyiv, airstrikes underway

(Kyiv) Explosions rang out in the centre and east of Kyiv on Saturday night, AFP journalists reported, with the Ukrainian air force reporting two Russian missiles heading towards the capital.

The Kyiv military administration reported on the Telegram messenger that the air defense had been activated.

Air raid sirens sounded in the capital and at least two flashes of light were seen on the horizon in the night, according to an AFP reporter.

In recent days, many Ukrainians have been worried about a possible Russian airstrike in response to the ongoing incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, north of the Ukrainian border.

On Telegram, the Air Force also reported around 10 p.m. Saturday (3 p.m. Eastern Time) that several regions of the country were being targeted by a series of drone attacks.

Ukrainian authorities have not yet reported any damage or casualties.

Ukraine is regularly hit by deadly missile and drone strikes. To protect itself, Kyiv is asking its Western allies to provide it with more air defense systems.

On the Russian side, Governor Alexei Smirnov said that 13 people had been injured in Kursk, two of them seriously, when debris from a Ukrainian missile shot down during the night fell on a building.
