War in Ukraine, Day 872 | Russia claims capture of new village in eastern Ukraine

(Moscow) Russia claimed control of a new village in eastern Ukraine on Sunday, continuing its push into Ukrainian defensive lines without making a major breakthrough so far.

“Units of the Vostok group of troops captured the village of Urozhainoye” in the Donetsk region, the Russian Defense Ministry said in its daily report.

This village, located on the southern front, is close to the Zaporizhzhia region and was recaptured by the Ukrainian army during its counter-offensive in 2023. Russian troops advanced there on a south-north axis, along the Mokri Yaly river.

Russia has been gaining ground in eastern Ukraine since the failure of a major Ukrainian counteroffensive last summer and the fall of the Avdiivka fortress in February. It is fighting Ukrainian forces short of ammunition and new recruits.

In May, Russian troops also launched an offensive in the Kharkiv region (northeast), which was quickly slowed by the sending of reinforcements by Ukraine, thus forcing it to stretch its force.

President Vladimir Putin has demanded that any peace be achieved by withdrawing Ukrainian forces from four regions in eastern and southern Ukraine that the Russian army partially occupies. These demands have been rejected by both Kyiv and Western supporters.
