(Kyiv) Russian forces launched air attacks at dawn on Sunday against Kyiv as well as the Lviv region in western Ukraine, according to local officials.
“Explosions in the capital. Air defense works. Don’t leave the shelters,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram.
The governor of the Lviv region, Maksym Kozytskyï, reported missile attacks in the Stryï district, south of the city of Lviv.
An air alert was issued across Ukraine, the military said.
The operational command of the Polish Armed Forces (RSZ) indicated for its part “observing intense activity of long-range aviation of the Russian Federation” during the night, in connection with the attacks in Ukraine.
“All necessary procedures to ensure the security of Polish airspace have been activated and the RSZ is constantly monitoring the situation,” it said in a statement.
Russia and Ukraine have increased mutual air attacks in recent weeks.
Ukraine, faced with the Russian invasion and daily bombings of its cities for two years, has promised to respond by bringing the fighting to Russian soil.
Russia responded with an escalation of its own strikes, including firing dozens of missiles and launching dozens of explosive drones on Friday to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
