(Kyiv) At least nine people were injured by Russian strikes overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday in Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, the regional governor announced, the day after bombings left 18 dead in the country.

“Around 10 p.m. local time (3 p.m. Eastern time), the enemy fired on […] Kharkiv” with “S-300 missiles,” Oleg Synegoubov, the Ukrainian head of the eponymous region, explained on Telegram.

“The attack left nine people injured, including a child, a 4-year-old girl, who was treated on the spot,” he lamented, specifying that “four people were hospitalized: two men and two women.”

At the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Russian forces attempted, but failed, to conquer Kharkiv. Then they were forced to retreat from almost the entire eponymous region.

But the Russian army regularly bombed the city of nearly a million and a half inhabitants before the war and it has been leading an offensive in the region since the summer, aiming in particular to reoccupy the Kupiansk district.

In the southern region of Kherson, partially occupied by Russia, regional authorities announced on Wednesday the death of five civilians the day before in several Russian strikes.

Six people were injured in these attacks, according to Governor Oleksandr Prokudin, who commented on the situation on social networks.

Since the end of December 2023, Russia has increased large-scale bombings on numerous Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv, causing dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries.

In retaliation, Ukraine attacked Russian cities, particularly Belgorod, with drones and missiles, and called on its Western backers to provide more munitions and anti-aircraft systems.

In the morning, Russian authorities said four Ukrainian drones had been shot down in the Oryol region (about 300 km south of Moscow) and another near Belgorod.
