Roman Abramovich is one of five Russian oligarchs whose name has recently been added to the list of Canadian sanctions targets because of their close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to the UK government, Roman Abramovich is using his role with Evraz to help destabilize Ukraine during the Russian military’s invasion of the country. London has already sanctioned him for his links with the Kremlin.
The exact nature of the Canadian sanctions has not been specified.
On the other hand, Prime Minister Trudeau has not ruled out the establishment of an air corridor allowing refugees who have fled Ukraine and who would like to leave Europe to find asylum in Canada.
Prime Minister Trudeau is due to hold a press conference in Poland on Friday morning, a few hours before leaving Warsaw to return to Canada; he should arrive there around 4:30 p.m.
He will thus put an end to his journey which took him to four European countries.
On Thursday, Polish President Andrzej Duda told him that every day 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing their war-torn country find refuge in Poland.
Mr. Trudeau appeared to be on the verge of tears a few times when he was introduced to some of these refugees at a hotel in Warsaw.
