A total of four explosions were heard early Tuesday morning in Kyiv, a city almost completely surrounded by Russian forces that attacked Ukraine on February 24.

Buildings and a metro station were hit, AFP journalists noted.

On Facebook, emergency services announced that a “strike” had hit a 15-storey building in the Svyatoshin district in western Kyiv, setting the entire building on fire. They said they were able to save 27 people.

Rescuers added that another building in the neighborhood had been hit and that a low-intensity fire had then broken out.

Emergency services also said that a strike had hit a nine-storey building in the northwest of the Ukrainian capital, in the Podil district. A fire was extinguished by firefighters. One person was taken care of and hospitalized, according to the emergency services.

All the windows of the building and those located nearby were blown, saw an AFP journalist on the spot. In the early morning, several people were throwing debris through the windows of the ravaged apartments.

In a separate statement, Ukrainian relief said that a strike had also caused the fire of a house in the district of Ossokorky, in the south-east of the capital, without however causing any casualties.

The emergency services did not give details on the type of ammunition used in each of these cases.

Fighting has intensified in recent days around Kyiv.

Half of the more than three million inhabitants have left since the beginning of the Russian offensive.

On Monday, several deaths and injuries were reported after bombings in different parts of the capital.

Intense fighting has been going on for several days between Russian and Ukrainian forces on the northwestern outskirts of Kyiv.
