War between Hamas and Israel: “We must reach a ceasefire,” says the president of iReMMO

A seventh day of truce between Hamas and Israel was negotiated on the night of November 29-30. “I hope that the truce will continue. Beyond the truces, the idea is that we must arrive at a ceasefire. (…) I don’t really see what today means Today there is a resumption of the war. (…) The Israelis hold the northern part of Gaza. It’s a bit of a stalemate.”, explains Jean-Paul Chagnollaud, president of the Institute for Mediterranean Middle East Research and Studies (iReMMO). A “political” response

Asked about the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, he replied: “We have been in a situation of military occupation for decades. It is obvious that the people who are under occupation have only one desire (…) and that is to get out. It is normal that there is this violence.” The researcher insists that he “needs politics”because “It’s not weapons that will solve this problem”.

Concerning the West Bank, Jean-Paul Chagnollaud recalls that the “tension”in the territory, “has always been there”. “In recent years, there have been regular deaths. (…) The Israeli response is always more force, more weapons distributed to civilians.
