There is this little something undeniably calmer, wiser perhaps, in Juan Wauters’ latest album. If he took us with him in a joyful agitation so far, the Uruguayan guitarist and singer-songwriter, based in New York for twenty years, seems to have settled in an undoubtedly more pensive indie-rock, even a little pop sometimes. Proof of this is with the cover of Wandering Rebel, colored by a calm sea, or his collaborations – Frankie Cosmos, John Carroll Kirby, among others. Of course, Juan Wauters is Juan Wauters, and his music remains tinged by his many tours and travels, with a mixture of languages and sounds that sometimes call bossa-nova, as with Nube Negrasometimes folk, in Carriage For example. Still, the artist cultivates a sense of humor and benevolence that are dear to him: the delicious Milanesa al Panin duet with the Argentinean Zoe Gotusso, is without doubt the piece that crystallizes in itself the essence of Juan Wauters, joyful and amusing.
