Voyou, the musician who puts images in his songs

Every day during the summer, the franceinfo culture department shares its favorites with you. Saturday July 15: the musician Voyou, in concert at the Vieilles Charrues festival.

Voyou is one of those musicians who have succeeded in very few titles to install a recognizable leg among a thousand. The multi-instrumentalist from Lille is passionate about music, a craftsman of creation, with his trumpet or machines that he twists in all directions to produce the desired sound in the studio. He never stops, when he’s not touring with other musician friends.

This week at the Francofolies and Saturday evening at the Vieilles Charrues, it is in his name that he is performing with a new way of presenting himself on stage. “I’m super happyhe told franceinfo, because it’s the first time I’ve done a live where you can completely do without a computer, sequences, clicks, things like that, where you suddenly have a space of freedom which is great and who is this I wanted from the start. But it’s the thing that costs the most because when you have songs that are very arranged, well, you have to have a lot of instruments playing. There, I am extremely happy to have the people who accompany me too because they are able to always question me and to do it sincerely and always in the right direction.”.

The importance of decor

“Very produced” for him means, as on his last album, inserting sounds of birds or insects. The nature that insinuates itself into the music and the subject. In reality, Voyou always tries to tell stories, skits or human, romantic or melancholic sequences. Key word live as on the album: the decor. “I try to bring as many keys as possible so that we have images in the music, in the stories that I tell. You have a story and you have all its decorum. All that is really important, but I think no matter what, well, it’s all about the human anyway, always.”

“I need us to feel the season we’re in. If it’s hot, if it’s cold and if it’s windy, if it’s sunny, where is we find ourselves? I need the mind to be able to project itself into a setting.”

Like a cinematographer, Voyou builds his decor and his atmosphere, eager to share his stories up close, as well as his desires elsewhere.
