Mathilde Panot, MP for Val-de-Marne and president of the LFI group in the National Assembly, was the guest on Franceinfo’s 8:30 a.m. show on Wednesday December 20, 2023. The immigration law finally passed by Parliament, France’s role in the war between Hamas and Israel, the European elections… She was responding to Salhia Brakhlia and Jérôme Chapuis.
Immigration law: “I request the pure and simple withdrawal of the text”
“The government is lying” saying he doesn’t have “need the votes of the RN”, says Mathilde Panot, president of the France Insoumise group at the National Assembly, the day after the adoption of the text negotiated by the joint committee. She demands his “pure and simple withdrawal”.
“We will refer the matter to the Constitutional Council. Whatever the result, we ask Emmanuel Macron not to promulgate this law.”she adds. “This law is a complete attack on fundamental rights that we have not seen in this country for at least 50 years”affirms the president of the rebellious deputies. “We, in power, will cancel this law”, she maintains. The head of state pledged on Monday not to promulgate the law if it was passed with the votes of the National Rally.
“This text is not an anti-Le Pen weapon”
If Mathilde Panot is revolted by the vote on the law, Marine Le Pen is delighted. There patron of the National Rally group in the National Assembly even thanks the left for having allowed this joint law commission, which therefore led to a favorable vote on the immigration law. “I too would like to thank Ms. Le Pen for the political clarification which shows that the only bulwark today for the extreme right is the force that we represent”replied Mathilde Panot.
“This law” is not “an anti-Le Pen weapon”, as the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, said, but one “screening of Le Pen”. “Those who serve as a stepping stone [au RN] are called the Macronists. In a normal democracy when the rejection motion is adopted, that is to say the national representation votes against the text, the text is withdrawn. The Macronists have decided to go in force.” Therefore, “Madame Borne must leave”, she insists.
War in Gaza: “We demand that sanctions be taken against Israel”
Concerns are growing over the risk of an extension of the conflict marked by attacks carried out by the Houthi rebels of Yemen, allies of Hamas, against international maritime traffic in the Red Sea. France has decided to participate in the coalition led by the United States to protect naval commerce. For Mathilde Panot,France must now move from words to action. “We demand that sanctions be taken against Israel. To force, demand that this ceasefire can happen. Economic sanctions, for example. The voice of France cannot zigzag like that. It must be clear and it must carry the language of peace and international law.”
European elections: Nupes hopes for a common list
“We still hope that the other Nupes parties come to their senses and responsibility and propose a common list for the 2024 European elections”explains Mathilde Panot. “Our joint list proposals are still open,” assures the MP, “given what is happening in the country”, she adds, referring to the vote in Parliament on Tuesday evening on the immigration bill. Mathilde Panot thus confirms that rebellious France could line up behind an environmentalist list, for example, of which Marie Toussaint would be at the head of the list. “This is why we did not formally say that Manon Aubry would be our head of list”she explains.
