War in Ukraine: volunteers travel the front to recover the remains of killed soldiers
(France 2)
Volunteers do not hesitate to go to the Ukrainian front to search for the bodies of killed soldiers, in order to bring them back to their families. Members of the Platsdarm group collect the bodies of both Russians and Ukrainians.
In the Bakhmout region (Ukraine), members of the Platsdarm group are moving forward discreetly and cautiously. The ground is mined, and enemy lines are right in front. Oleksiy Youkov, founder of the Platsdarm group, and his colleagues are volunteers. Tirelessly, for months, risking their lives, they have traveled the front to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers.
Everything is analyzed to discover the identity of the corpses
Back from the front, volunteers can begin the work of identifying the remains. One of the corpses is that of a Ukrainian. The other bodies are all Russian. Uniform, personal items, telephone: everything is analyzed as at a crime scene, to discover the identity of each soldier.
It doesn’t matter whether the corpses are Russian or Ukrainian, Oleksiy Youkov says he has only one goal: that each mother can find her son and bury him with dignity. Recovering the Russian bodies presents another major challenge. In fact, kyiv will be able to exchange them for the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers.
