Volkswagen Golf R: a special edition reserved for Canada

Returning to Canada in completely refreshed form for 2022, the Volkswagen Golf R impresses on many levels. Moreover, along with the Golf GTI, it won the title of Best New Car of the Year awarded by the team at Car guide.

In the last few days, the German manufacturer announced a special edition that marks the 20 years of the Golf R on the market. It will be the most powerful ever offered as standard with 328 horsepower instead of 315.

The car will also have a feature that, when activated, revs the engine at 2,500 rpm on start-up for a more aggressive sound. Added to this will be unique visual touches, such as “20” badging and 19-inch two-tone wheels.

Volkswagen plans to offer this Golf R for just one year, obviously, first in Europe but also in the US and other markets.

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to do that here. In fact, Volkswagen Canada’s director of communications, Thomas Tetzlaff, told the Car guide that a special edition slightly different from the one described above is being prepared for Canada.

Details will be known in just a few months, as the project is still in an early stage, but expect something “pretty cool”, according to the spokesperson. It will likely be a 2023 model.

As for the price, it should be close to $50,000, since the Golf R 2022 currently starts at $44,995 in the manual version and $46,395 with the automatic transmission, transport and preparation not included.
