As part of the conflict in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin threatens, Thursday, March 31, to no longer deliver gas to countries that refuse to pay for it in rubles. By this, the Russian president intends to respond to economic sanctions.
On the supply of Russian gas, Vladimir Putin put pressure on the so-called countries “unfriendly“, and laid down, in the afternoon of Thursday, March 31, its conditions: “Yes these payments are not made in rubles, we will consider it as default of payment by buyers. In other words, existing contracts will be terminated“.
At the same time, Germany and France signified their refusal to pay in rubles. “I confirm that contracts in euros must be paid in euros, and will be paid in euros“, said the Minister of Economy Bruno Le Maire. Russian gas represents 40% of supplies in Europe, and 17% in France. According to Nicolas Goldberg, an expert on the subject, stopping deliveries would therefore endanger the supply of certain companies. On the afternoon of Thursday March 31, Berlin and Paris indicated that they were preparing for the worst-case scenario.
