A president’s support for a former counterpart. Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on Tuesday September 12 that his former American counterpart Donald Trump was the victim of “political persecution” due to his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election in the United States, against Joe Biden. “This is politically motivated persecution on the part of its competitor”affirmed the Russian president, during an economic forum in Vladivostok, Russia, believing that this demonstrated “the perversion of the American system”.

Donald Trump is being prosecuted in a multitude of cases in the United States, where he is suspected of electoral pressure during the 2020 presidential election, suspicious payments to a former porn actress or even negligent management of confidential documents after his departure from the White House. The former American president denounces political prosecutions.

Vladimir Putin, who rejects accusations of proximity between the former American president and Russia, also assured that he did not expect a change in policy towards the Kremlin, whoever wins the American presidential election next year. “I don’t think there will be any fundamental changes in the direction of U.S. foreign policy toward Russia, no matter who is elected president.”he said, accusing the authorities of having installed “an anti-Russian spirit in American society”.
