Presidential election in Russia: Vladimir Putin, a coronation surrounded by many questions
(France 2)
After 24 years in power, Vladimir Putin was re-elected President of the Russian Federation, with more than 87% of the votes according to the first provisional figures, Sunday March 17.
87% of votes in favor of Vladimir Putin. The provisional results were given by Russian state television channels at 7 p.m., Sunday March 17, after three days of voting with a written outcome in advance, due to a lack of credible opponents. Vladimir Putin, 71, will therefore begin his fifth term for the good of “Great Russia”, believe his most convinced voters in Moscow. Vladimir Putin has carefully orchestrated his reign by carving out a tailor-made constitution. With this election, he will be able to remain in charge of the country until he turns 84, in 2030.
An isolated but powerful president
Under his reign, the regime became radicalized. The master of the Kremlin makes decisions alone, his Prime Minister is only a manager in the shadows and in his inner circle were chosen men from the security services. “They are essentially puppets, people who obviously push him into his own ideology“, analyzes Nicolas Tenzer, teacher at Sciences Po and specialist in geostrategic issues.
Targeted by an international arrest warrant, Vladimir Putin is a warlord isolated from much of the world. However, Syria, Iran and North Korea support it militarily. In its desire to oppose the West, China is a strong ally of Russia.
