“It is a bad decision that the Constitutional Council took”, declares Friday April 14 on franceinfo Alexis Corbière, deputy La France Insoumise of Seine-Saint-Denis. For him, “the disagreement remains, the popular rejection remains and nothing stops”. The Constitutional Council has validated most of the pension reform, including the flagship measure to lower the legal retirement age to 64. However, he challenged six secondary provisions of the bill adopted in Parliament, including the senior index.

Alexis Corbière recalls that he “It is constitutional to demonstrate, to strike and no decision can tell a people that it is over and that their disagreements must be buried. We must continue”.

“Emmanuel Macron has weakened the presidential function. He has brutalized Parliament and he has put the Constitutional Council in a situation where even this moment comes out weakened”.

“Long live the Sixth Republic”, he says. Despite the Council’s decision, Alexis Corbière still wants to believe that the reform will not come into force: “Emmanuel Macron is not forced to promulgate this law. He can, according to article 10, return to the National Assembly for a new vote. Why doesn’t he do it?”he asks.

A “new version” of the RIP

About the request for a referendum of shared initiative (RIP) supported by the left and rejected by the Constitutional Council, the deputy has “hopefully the second version we filed will be heard.”

“In 2027, concludes Alexis Corbière, we have to win. We will obviously repeal this law if by then we have not obtained it. The people have not said their last word”.
